Question

Answer

1.     How do I join the club?

In the first instance, email one of the club officers, for which see “Contacts”.

2.     Can I try the club before I join?

Potential members can visit three times before deciding whether to join.

3.     When is a good time to come?

By arrangement with one of the club officers on a suitable Thursday evening during the winter season (October to March).

4.     How much does it cost?

Please refer to “About us” page.

5.     Will I have to join the English Chess Federation (ECF)?

Yes, in due course.

6.     Will I be good enough?

Yes. Anyone who knows the moves may join and improve by playing.

7.     Does the club provide coaching?

The club itself provides no instruction beyond informal chat and the occasional seminar between members.

8.     Does the club run sessions for juniors?

No.

9.     Do you teach adults how to play?

No, but it's relatively easy to teach yourself the basics with a book, DVD, computer programme or the internet. After that come along and see how you fare.

10.  Why aren't there more women in your club?  Why don't more women play chess?

This is one of life's mysteries!  If you wish to help redress the balance, you will be more than welcome.  We have had a few female members in the recent past.

11.  Is the club accessible for wheelchair users?

Unfortunately the function room we use at the Shrubbery is downstairs with no wheelchair access..

12.  Is there a bar?

Yes.

13.  Will you run my ad or put a link to my website or blog?

Perhaps.

14.  Do you accept donations or bequests?

Yes, of course!  We are also happy to accept unwanted chess books and DVDs for our club library.
